About this tool

Splits the text into words, ignores capital letters and punctuation, and counts each word. You can leave out about 150 very common English words so the words that matter stand out. The percentage is each word’s share of all the words in the text. Nothing leaves your browser.

A word frequency counter shows which words you use most. Writers use it to spot repeated words, students to check an essay for overused phrases, and website owners to see which keywords a page really focuses on. Paste any text to get a ranked list of words with their counts and percentages, the total number of words and how many different words you used.

  2. Choose whether to skip common words such as the, and and of.

Counting a short passage

The sample text, The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The dog sleeps, and the fox runs off into the woods, has 20 words. Counting every word, the comes top with 5 uses, or 25% of the text. Skipping common words, fox and dog tie for first place with 2 uses each, which shows what the passage is really about.

Word frequency and keyword density

Keyword density is the number of times a word appears divided by the total number of words, shown here as a percentage. It is a quick way to see whether a piece of writing stays on topic or leans too heavily on one word. Search engines no longer reward pages for repeating a keyword, and stuffing the same word into every sentence makes text harder to read, so use the list to find repetition to trim rather than a target to hit. Common words such as the, of and to make up a large part of any English text, which is why the counter can skip them. Words are matched exactly after ignoring capitals, so run and running are counted separately.
