How to calculate a percentage
A percentage is a number expressed as a fraction of 100. The right formula depends on what you are trying to find.
X ÷ 100 × YX ÷ Y × 100(New − Original) ÷ Original × 100Original − (Original × Discount ÷ 100)Example: 15% of 200 is 30 because 15 ÷ 100 × 200 = 30.
What is a percentage?
A percentage tells you how much something represents out of 100. For example, 25% is the same as 25 out of 100, 0.25 as a decimal, or 1/4 as a fraction.
Percentage increase vs. percentage decrease
Percentage change uses the original value as the reference. A move from 50 to 75 is a 50% increase, while a move from 75 back to 50 is a 33.33% decrease. The two directions are not symmetrical.

How do I calculate X% of a number?
Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 20% of 150 is 20 ÷ 100 × 150 = 30.
How do I find what percentage one number is of another?
Divide the first number by the reference number and multiply by 100. For example, 30 is 25% of 120 because 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%.
How do I calculate percentage increase?
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, and multiply by 100. A result above zero is an increase.
How do I calculate percentage decrease?
Use the same percentage-change formula. When the new value is lower than the original, the result is a decrease.
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to find the saving, then subtract that saving from the original price.
