Typing Speed Test
Find your typing speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy.
About this tool
Type the passage as quickly and accurately as you can. The timer starts with your first key press. WPM counts correct characters divided by five per minute, so mistakes lower your score; pasting is turned off.
Check how fast you type for a job application, school or just to see yourself improve. Choose 30 seconds, one minute or two minutes, type the passage shown and get your speed in words per minute and your accuracy, with mistakes highlighted as you go. The test runs entirely in your browser.
How to use the Typing Speed Test
- Choose the test length.
- Click in the typing box and start typing the passage; the timer starts with your first letter.
- Keep going until the time runs out or you finish the passage.
- Read your WPM and accuracy, then press Restart or New text to try again.
How the score is worked out
Suppose you type 280 characters in one minute and 250 of them match the passage. A word is counted as five characters, so 250 ÷ 5 = 50 correct words in one minute: 50 WPM. Your accuracy is 250 ÷ 280 = 89%. If the test lasted 30 seconds instead, the same 250 correct characters would be 100 WPM.
What counts as a good typing speed
Words per minute is measured as characters typed divided by five, the standard length of a word including spaces, so long and short words are treated fairly. Many people who type regularly reach about 35 to 45 WPM; office and data-entry jobs often ask for 40 to 60 WPM, and fast typists pass 80. Accuracy matters as much as speed, because every mistake needs correcting later. To improve, keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF and JKL;), look at the screen rather than the keyboard, and practise little and often. Speed builds once the finger movements become automatic.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average typing speed?
Around 40 words per minute is a common average for adults who type regularly. Touch typists who practise often reach 60 to 80 WPM or more.
How is WPM calculated?
Correct characters typed, divided by five, divided by the minutes taken. Using correct characters means errors lower the score.
Why can I not paste text?
Pasting is turned off so the result reflects real typing.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, but phone keyboards are much slower than physical ones, so compare your results on the same kind of device.
