This tool is designed to process your input in your browser. No account is required.

About this tool

Letters are made lowercase, accents are removed (é becomes e), & becomes “and”, apostrophes are dropped and every other run of punctuation or spaces becomes a single separator. A length limit cuts at a word boundary where possible.

A slug is the readable part at the end of a web address, such as /easy-weeknight-dinners. Good slugs are short, lowercase and use hyphens between words, which makes them easier to read, share and rank in search results. Paste a title and this tool turns it into a clean slug, removing accents, symbols and extra spaces, ready to copy into WordPress, Shopify or your own site.

How to use the Slug Generator

  1. Paste or type your title or text.
  2. Choose hyphens (recommended for web pages) or underscores.
  3. Set a maximum length if your system needs one, or leave 0.
  4. Copy the slug.

Turning a recipe title into a slug

The title “10 Easy Weeknight Dinners: Crème Brûlée & More!” becomes 10-easy-weeknight-dinners-creme-brulee-and-more. The capital letters become lowercase, the accents on Crème Brûlée are removed, the ampersand becomes “and”, and the colon, exclamation mark and spaces each become a single hyphen. With a 30-character limit it is cut at a word break to 10-easy-weeknight-dinners.

What makes a good URL slug

Search engines read hyphens as spaces between words, so “weeknight-dinners” is understood as two words, while underscores can join them into one; that is why hyphens are the usual choice for web pages. Keep slugs short and descriptive: three to five meaningful words is plenty, and words such as “a”, “the” or dates can often go, so a page stays relevant if you update it next year. Stick to lowercase, because some servers treat /Page and /page as different addresses. Avoid changing a slug once a page is published; if you must, set up a 301 redirect from the old address so links and search rankings carry over.

Frequently asked questions

What is a slug in a URL?

The part of the address that identifies a specific page, usually after the last slash. In example.com/blog/easy-dinners, the slug is easy-dinners.

Should I use hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Google treats them as word separators, and they are the convention on most websites. Underscores are more common in file names and code.

Does the slug affect SEO?

A little. A clear slug that contains the main words of the page helps people and search engines understand it, but the page content matters far more.

Can a slug contain capital letters or spaces?

It can, but it should not. Spaces turn into %20 in links, and capitals can cause duplicate addresses on some servers.
