Screen Resolution Checker
See your screen resolution, device pixel ratio, approximate physical pixels and the size of this browser window. Resize the window to watch it update.
About this tool
Read from your browser’s screen and window properties. Browser zoom and operating-system scaling change the device pixel ratio, so the physical pixel figure is an estimate. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Find out your screen resolution, device pixel ratio and the size of your browser window. Web designers use these numbers to test layouts, and they help when choosing wallpapers, checking a new monitor or describing a display problem to support. The values come straight from your browser and update when you resize the window.
How to use the Screen Resolution Checker
- Open this page on the screen you want to check.
- Read the screen resolution in CSS pixels and the device pixel ratio.
- Read the approximate physical pixels: the resolution multiplied by the pixel ratio.
- Resize or rotate the window to see the browser window size change.
A laptop and a phone
A laptop that reports 1536 × 864 with a device pixel ratio of 1.25 has a physical panel of about 1920 × 1080, a 16:9 screen with 125% Windows scaling. A phone that reports 390 × 844 with a ratio of 3 has about 1170 × 2532 physical pixels, a tall screen of about 9:19.5.
Common screen resolutions
Aspect ratios worked out with this tool.
| Resolution | Aspect ratio | Common on |
|---|---|---|
| 1920 × 1080 | 16:9 | Full HD monitors, laptops, TVs |
| 1366 × 768 | about 16:9 | Older and budget laptops |
| 1536 × 864 | 16:9 | 1080p laptops at 125% scaling |
| 2560 × 1440 | 16:9 | QHD monitors |
| 3840 × 2160 | 16:9 | 4K monitors and TVs |
| 1440 × 900 | 16:10 | Older MacBooks and monitors |
| 390 × 844 | about 9:19.5 | Many recent phones (CSS pixels) |
CSS pixels and physical pixels
Browsers measure in CSS pixels, which are scaled so that text is a readable size on every screen. Sharp screens pack 2, 3 or more physical pixels into each CSS pixel; that multiplier is the device pixel ratio. Operating-system scaling and browser zoom change it too, so in most browsers zooming to 150% on a 1920 × 1080 screen makes it report 1280 × 720 with a ratio of 1.5. Multiplying the two gives a good estimate of the physical resolution.
Common mistakes
- Treating CSS pixels as physical pixels. A phone reporting 390 pixels wide has well over 1,000 physical pixels.
- Checking with the browser zoomed in or out. Reset zoom to 100% first.
- Confusing the window size with the screen size. The window is smaller because of toolbars, the taskbar and the browser frame.
Frequently asked questions
What is my screen resolution?
It is shown at the top of this tool, in CSS pixels, with the approximate physical resolution below it.
Why does my 1920 × 1080 laptop show 1536 × 864?
Windows is scaling the display to 125% so text is easier to read. 1536 × 1.25 = 1920.
What is the device pixel ratio?
How many physical pixels make up one CSS pixel. It is usually 1 on older monitors and 2 or 3 on phones and high-resolution screens.
Is any information sent anywhere?
Not by this tool. It only reads values your browser already has and shows them on the page.
