About this tool

Names are shuffled with your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, then dealt into teams in turn, so team sizes never differ by more than one. The names stay in your browser.

Split a class, a five-a-side group, a quiz night or a work workshop into fair, random teams in one click. Paste the names, choose how many teams or how many people per team, and shuffle as often as you like. Teams never differ in size by more than one person.

How to use the Random Team Generator

  1. Paste or type the names, one per line or separated by commas.
  2. Choose whether to set the number of teams or the number of people per team.
  3. Type the number.
  4. Press Shuffle teams for a new draw, then Copy teams to paste them into a chat.

10 people into 3 teams

With 10 names and 3 teams, the names are shuffled and dealt out in turn, so the teams have 4, 3 and 3 people. If you choose 4 people per team instead, 10 people need 3 teams (10 ÷ 4 = 2.5, rounded up), and the tool deals them out as 4, 3 and 3 so no team is left with only 2.

How the teams are made fair

The tool shuffles the whole list with a Fisher–Yates shuffle using your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, so every order is equally likely. It then deals the names into the teams one at a time, like dealing cards, which keeps team sizes within one of each other. Names stay in your browser and are not saved.

Common mistakes

  • Pasting names with extra commas or blank lines. Empty entries are ignored, but check that each person appears once.
  • Re-shuffling until you get the teams you wanted. Agree on one shuffle before you start.
  • Asking for more teams than people. The tool caps the number of teams at the number of names.

Frequently asked questions

Is the split really random?

Yes. The names are shuffled with a cryptographic random number generator before they are dealt into teams.

Can I make teams of a set size?

Yes. Choose People per team. If the names don’t divide evenly, the remaining people are spread across the teams.

Is there a limit on names?

Up to 500 names at a time.

Can I balance teams by skill?

Not automatically. For skill balance, list your strongest players first and split them by hand, then shuffle the rest.
