About this tool

Enter the distance you ran or plan to run and your time, as hours:minutes:seconds or minutes:seconds. You get your pace per kilometre and per mile, your speed and the finishing times for common race distances at the same pace.

Pace is how long it takes you to cover one kilometre or one mile, and it is the number most runners train and race by. Enter a distance and a time to see your pace per kilometre and per mile, your speed in km/h and mph, and how long a 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon would take at the same pace. Use it to plan a race goal, check a parkrun result or set the pace for a training run.

How to use the Pace Calculator

  1. Enter the distance and choose kilometres or miles.
  2. Enter the time as h:mm:ss (1:45:30) or mm:ss (25:00).
  3. Read your pace per km and per mile, and your speed.
  4. Check the race times underneath to see what the same pace would give over other distances.

A 25-minute 5K

25 minutes is 1,500 seconds, and 1,500 ÷ 5 = 300 seconds, so the pace is 5:00 per kilometre. A mile is 1.609 km, so that is 8:03 per mile, and the speed is 5 ÷ (25 ÷ 60) = 12 km/h. Holding the same pace would give 50:00 for 10K, 1:45:29 for a half marathon and 3:30:59 for a marathon, although most runners slow down over longer races.

Pace, speed and race predictions

Pace is time divided by distance; speed is distance divided by time, so they are two ways of saying the same thing. Runners prefer pace because it maps directly onto a watch: a 6:00 /km pace means every kilometre marker should pass six minutes after the last. A half marathon is 21.0975 km and a marathon 42.195 km. The race times shown assume you can hold exactly the same pace, which is realistic for similar distances but optimistic for much longer ones. A common adjustment, Riegel’s formula, adds about 6% for each doubling of distance, so a 25-minute 5K runner might expect about 52 minutes for 10K rather than 50. Heat, hills and wind all slow you down too.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good 5K time?

Many recreational runners finish a 5K in 25 to 35 minutes. Under 25 minutes (5:00 /km) is a strong amateur time, and under 20 minutes is fast for most club runners.

How do I convert pace per km to pace per mile?

Multiply by 1.609. A 5:00 /km pace is about 8:03 per mile. To go from per mile to per km, divide by 1.609.

How fast is a 6-minute kilometre?

10 km/h, or about 6.2 mph. That gives a 30-minute 5K and a 1-hour 10K.

Can I use it for walking or cycling?

Yes. Pace and speed work the same for any activity; cyclists usually look at the speed figure.
