About this tool

Write a whole number or decimal out in words, up to just under one quintillion. Choose British style, which adds "and" (one hundred and five), or American style (one hundred five). Amounts also get cheque-style wording with cents as a fraction.

Spell out numbers for cheques, invoices, legal documents, essays or teaching. Type any number and the tool writes it out in words, using British or American style. For amounts it also gives cheque wording, with the cents written as a fraction of 100. It runs in your browser.

Writing 1,234.56 in words

Type 1234.56 with British style selected. The words are "One thousand two hundred and thirty-four point five six". The cheque wording is "One thousand two hundred and thirty-four and 56/100 only", which is how the amount would be written on a cheque. In American style the whole part becomes "one thousand two hundred thirty-four", without the "and".

How numbers are written in words

The number is split into groups of three digits from the right: units, thousands, millions, billions and so on. Each group is written as hundreds, tens and ones, then followed by its scale word. Numbers from 21 to 99 that are not whole tens take a hyphen, as in forty-two. British English adds "and" before the last part of a group, as in one hundred and five, and before small final numbers, as in one thousand and five; American English usually leaves it out. Decimals are read digit by digit after the word point. On cheques the cents are written as a fraction such as 56/100, and "only" is often added so nothing can be squeezed in after the amount.
