MB to GB Converter
Convert file and data sizes between megabytes and gigabytes, with the binary GiB figure. Type in either side.
About this tool
Uses decimal units, as on data plans and storage packaging: 1 GB = 1 000 MB and 1 MB = 1 000 000 bytes. The GiB figure uses binary units (1 GiB = 1 073 741 824 bytes), which Windows labels as GB.
Data bundles, file downloads, phone storage and cloud plans mix megabytes, gigabytes and the binary units computers use. Type a size in megabytes to see gigabytes, gibibytes and terabytes, or type gigabytes to get megabytes. Both boxes update as you type.
How to use the MB to GB Converter
- Type a size in megabytes, for example 1500.
- Read the gigabytes next to it.
- Compare the GiB figure if your computer shows a smaller number.
- Or type gigabytes instead, and the megabytes update.
A 1 500 MB download
1 500 MB is 1.5 GB in the decimal units data plans use. Windows would show the same file as about 1.397 GB, because it counts in binary gibibytes: 1 500 000 000 bytes ÷ 1 073 741 824 = 1.397 GiB.
Why your 1 TB drive shows 931 GB
Storage makers and mobile networks use decimal (SI) units: 1 GB = 1 000 MB = 1 000 000 000 bytes. Windows counts in binary units, where 1 GiB = 1 024 MiB = 1 073 741 824 bytes, but still label them GB. Both describe the same bytes, so a 1 TB drive appears as about 931 GB on Windows. Neither number is wrong; they use different units.
Frequently asked questions
How many MB is 1 GB?
1 000 MB in decimal units, as on data bundles. In binary units, 1 GiB is 1 024 MiB.
Is 1 GB 1 000 or 1 024 MB?
Officially 1 000 MB. The 1 024 figure belongs to the binary unit GiB, which some software also calls GB.
How many GB is 500 MB?
0.5 GB.
Why does my phone show less free space?
Part of the storage holds the operating system, and some systems show binary units, which make the total look smaller.
