About this tool
Enter the points earned or missed and the total to get the percentage and a letter grade on the common US scale (A 93 and above, B 83 to 86 and so on). Your school or course may use a different scale.
Teachers, students and parents can turn a raw score into a percentage and letter grade in seconds. Enter the points earned (or the number wrong) and the total points. The tool shows the percentage, the letter grade on the common US scale and how many more points would reach an A−. It runs in your browser.
How to use the Grade Calculator
- Enter the score.
- Enter the total points available.
- Choose whether the score is points earned or points missed.
- Read the percentage and letter grade, and the note about points needed for an A−.
43 out of 50
A student scores 43 out of 50. 43 / 50 × 100 = 86%, which is a B on the common US scale (83 to 86). Two more points (45 out of 50) would make 90%, an A−. If instead you know the student got 3 wrong on a 25-point quiz, choose Points missed: 25 − 3 = 22 correct, which is 88%, a B+.
How the grade is worked out
The percentage is the points earned divided by the total points, multiplied by 100. The letter comes from the scale used by many US schools: 90 and above is an A grade, 80 to 89 a B, 70 to 79 a C, 60 to 69 a D and below 60 an F, with plus and minus bands inside each. Scales vary between schools, countries and courses, so check your syllabus; a 70% is a pass in many places and a distinction in others. When a test has weighted sections, work out each section's percentage and weight it, or add the points if they already reflect the weighting. A score above the total means extra credit and gives more than 100%.
Frequently asked questions
What grade is 86%?
On the common US scale, 86% is a B (83 to 86). 87 to 89 is a B+ and 80 to 82 is a B−.
How do I calculate a test score percentage?
Divide the points earned by the total and multiply by 100. For 18 out of 24, 18 / 24 × 100 = 75%.
What percentage is 3 wrong out of 25?
22 correct out of 25, which is 88%. Choose Points missed, enter 3 and a total of 25.
Is a 70% a passing grade?
Often, but not always. On the US scale 70% is a C−, usually a pass. Some courses require 60% and some require more, so check your school's rules.
